Do you use exchange electricity? Reduce your bill with electrical load control

Previously, load control has been associated with the so-called Night Transfer, where the service has been activated between 10 pm and midnight, around the same time as the hours of cheaper transfer prices begin. However, with Caruna's revamped electricity load control service, the aim is to offer customers more options and choices. If you want to start your own hot water tank later at night, you can easily change the time in the Caruna+ service.
The revamped service has multiple benefits. Wholesale electricity prices are generally at their lowest during the dark hours of the night, between 1 am and 5 am.
"An actively price-conscious customer can save money by concentrating the use of electrically heated devices during the cheapest hours of the night. Changes can be easily made by the customer themselves through the application, and no electrician needs to be called," says project manager Ossi Juujärvi.
Load control also helps with the load on the electricity distribution network when consumption shifts from the peak hours of the evening to the quieter nighttime. When usage shifts away from the consumption peak between 4 pm and 8 pm, less adjustment power is needed, such as gas turbines or large diesel generators.
"In general, electricity production during quieter hours is more environmentally friendly. During peak hours, production often has to rely on sources that emit carbon dioxide."
Cheaper electricity after midnight
The electric load control service is aimed at customers using electric heating, who most often live in a private house. One of these is Jukka Ihamäki from Espoo, whose house is heated by night electricity.
"I buy exchange electricity, which is cheaper at night. Previously, the water heater switched on automatically between 10 pm and 11 pm, but I changed the time later with the Caruna Plus app. Hours used after midnight can save up to tens of percent on your electricity bill," Ihamäki says.
You can get the best benefit from load control by actively monitoring your electricity consumption. Ihamäki monitors consumption data from Caruna+.
"On cold frosty days, I moved the start of load control to midnight because it took longer to warm up. As the weather warms up, it has been possible to postpone the start time. When the heating starts after midnight, it is also easier to monitor daily consumption."
Load control has not affected everyday life or living comfort.
"The house still heats up in the same way. However, the absolute benefit is the savings in the price of electricity purchases," Ihamäki emphasizes.
