What happens during a power outage? – No risk of electric shock if the building’s electrical installations are in order

Article
Mitä sähkökatkon aikana tapahtuu?
The first effects of a power outage are seen at home: lights go out, electric heating stops, refrigerators and freezers may warm up, and cooking becomes impossible. Power outages do not cause electric shocks if the building is electrically saf

If a fault occurs in the power grid that causes an outage, the grid’s protective devices will cut off the electricity supply. Once the power is cut, no electric shock can occur in a building with properly functioning electrical installations. A power outage also does not damage intact, standard-compliant electrical devices.

"Electricity distribution companies deliver electricity to the connection point, which can be, for example, a metering center at the property boundary. The customer is responsible for ensuring that the installations beyond the connection point comply with regulations," says Jörgen Dahlqvist, Director of Operations at Caruna.

In buildings (properties), the owner is responsible for the condition and safety of the electrical system. It is also important for users to report any faults or deficiencies they notice in the electrical system.

The effects of a power outage can be surprising

Long power outages occur in Finland especially during storms. Many people may be surprised by how extensively a power outage can affect everyday life.

  • Water supply stops immediately or with a delay
  • Building heating systems stop working
  • Internet and phones work for a while
  • Lights go out, household appliances stop working
  • TV, radio, and other entertainment electronics stop working
  • Cooking becomes difficult, food warms up
  • Elevators may stop mid-ride
  • Shops, other businesses, and banks close; card payments are not possible
  • Fuel is not available at gas stations, electric cars cannot be charged
  • Trains, metros, and electric buses stop
  • Bus, ferry, and air traffic may be delayed

What to do during a power outage

  1. First, check the fuses and electrical devices
  2. When the power outage begins, turn off electrical appliances. It is most important to switch off the stove, iron, coffee maker, and washing machine. Check the outage map for the status and estimated duration of the outage.
  3. If you notice damaged power lines or a tree fallen on them, do not touch the lines – report it to Caruna easily via the outage map’s chat service or by calling 0800 1 95011. We are available around the clock via the fault service chat and phone.
