Caruna Oy and Caruna Espoo Oy: two separate electricity distribution companies

Caruna Oy and Caruna Espoo Oy are two separate electricity distribution companies with their own pricing. The network service rates are influenced by local network conditions, among other things.

Most of Caruna Espoo Oy's electricity network is in cities (Espoo, Kauniainen, Kirkkonummi and the center of Joensuu). Urban conditions are generally favourable for electricity distribution because people in cities live closer together, so it is not necessary to build as much electricity network infrastructure per customer. In cities, the electricity network is mostly underground, so it is better protected from weather damage, and there is less need for repairs and maintenance.

A large part of Caruna Oy's network is in rural areas (Western Finland, Central Uusimaa, Western Uusimaa, Southwest Finland, Satakunta, Southern, Central and Northern Ostrobothnia, and Koillismaa). There is significantly more electricity network infrastructure per customer in rural areas. The network is also highly exposed to the elements, which substantially increases the costs of maintenance and repairs.
