15-minute metering brings accuracy to electricity consumption monitoring

An electricity meter measures electricity consumption in intervals of either 60 or 15 minutes. The collection of electricity consumption data in 15-minute intervals is called 15-minute metering. This provides a more accurate picture of your electricity usage and enables you to schedule consumption for cheaper periods.

Caruna's electricity meters enable 15-minute metering for all customers. You can check on Caruna Plus whether your electricity meter measures your consumption in intervals of 60 or 15 minutes.

If your meter is set to hourly metering, as a private customer, you can request a transfer to 15-minute metering in Caruna Plus under the electricity network contract details. As a business customer, you can make the change in the metering point details. After the transfer, you can monitor your electricity consumption with 15-minute accuracy via the customer portal of Datahub. Caruna Plus will continue to display electricity consumption with an hourly accuracy.

Electricity markets transition to 15-minute pricing in October 2025

Currently, the spot price of electricity in the electricity markets is defined for each hour of the day. In October 2025, Finland and the entire EU will transition to 15-minute pricing, where the price of electricity will be defined for 15-minute intervals instead of the previous 60-minute intervals.

The transition to 15-minute pricing will not affect Caruna's network service prices. Caruna's electricity network agreements and their billing will remain unchanged, and the transition to 15-minute pricing does not require any action from you. However, you can request a transfer to 15-minute metering on Caruna Plus if you wish. This will only affect the monitoring of your electricity consumption.

You can check with your electricity retailer whether your electricity bill will transition to 15-minute pricing.

Why is 15-minute pricing being introduced?

The transition to 15-minute pricing is based on EU regulations aimed at improving the balance between electricity consumption and production in the electricity markets.

For the electricity system to function as it should, the amount of electricity produced must continuously equal the amount of electricity consumed. Electricity is increasingly being produced using variable and weather-dependent production methods, such as wind and solar power. The purpose of 15-minute pricing is to facilitate the balancing of the amount of electricity produced and consumed.
