Safety of our electricity network

A culture of safety is part of Caruna's corporate culture. We systematically enhance safety and our operations. Caruna’s safety operations are guided by the goal of preventing accidents, since even one accident is one too many. The safety of people and animals is at the heart of electricity network safety.

Customer safety foremost

We plan, build and maintain our electricity network in line with statutory requirements and the standards and best practices in the sector.

We take special care to ensure safety when we plan the network and select network components, as well as in the requirements related to construction sites and electrical work.

What do we do to ensure customer safety?

  • We continuously evaluate hazards related to our electricity network, categorise any safety shortfalls, and rectify them.
  • All our electrical equipment bears warning signs to indicate the danger of electric shocks.
  • We prevent access to electrical equipment by means such as appropriate locking and careful placement of equipment.
  • We repair any hazardous faults quickly.
  • We prevent unauthorised access to our work sites by delimiting and marking them as clearly as possible.

We monitor faults and the quality of electricity via remotely readable meters. Any deviations recorded by the meters are analysed so that we can investigate and rectify faults.

Our customer service team has the knowledge required to identify various types of faults based on our customers' descriptions, so we are able to rectify faults rapidly.

Electricity network maintenance

The basic task of electricity network maintenance is to maintain the standard of electrical safety and electricity supply required by law throughout the lifecycle of the electricity network. Maintenance safeguards the supply of electricity under all circumstances.

Maintenance measures ensure the electricity network is safe for customers, builders, maintainers, and the general public. At the same time, we ensure reliable electricity distribution to our customers.

Maintenance measures are based on the maintenance manual

Maintenance measures are carried out everywhere in Caruna's network area. All maintenance work is documented so that the implementation can be analysed.

Maintenance is guided by the maintenance manual, which is updated and approved by the company's senior management. The manual describes the maintenance and inspection measures required by the network components. The manual has already been in use for about 20 years.

The maintenance programme covers all maintenance work in the electricity network, such as inspections, servicing, clearing, and repairs, all the way from substations to the customer's electricity meter. An external expert approved by the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) monitors compliance with the maintenance programme annually.

All maintenance measures are carried out with respect for the customer experience, taking the environment into consideration and avoiding all unnecessary power outages.

Safety of the electricity network

A culture of safety is part of Caruna's corporate culture. We systematically enhance safety and our operations. Caruna’s safety operations are guided by the goal of preventing accidents, since even one accident is one too many.

The safety of people and animals is at the heart of electricity network safety.

The safety of the electricity network is important to society

The safety of the electricity network is also important in terms of network functionality: when the electricity network is safe, it operates as planned and provides customers with electricity.

Safety is also a crucial aspect of the security of supply, as a safe electricity network is more difficult to damage intentionally. Furthermore, a safe electricity network can better withstand challenging climate conditions, such as storms.

The safety of the electricity network is monitored

Multiple checks are carried out to ensure the safety of our electricity network. Most of the checks are required by law. The checks are carried out by contractors, Caruna and external experts.

Electrical safety regulations

In Finland, the basic electrical safety requirements are specified in the Electrical Safety Act. The law states that the electricity network must not present a hazard.

All electrical safety regulations are derived from legislation, and they are supplemented by separate standards. The supervisory authority, the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes), steers the regulations and approves the auditing organisations or companies that monitor compliance with the regulations.

We comply with the Electrical Safety Act and related regulations in everything we do.
