Increase the size of your electricity connection

If your electricity consumption needs have increased, perhaps due to a change in how you heat your property or a new electric vehicle charging point, you can upgrade your existing connection right; in other words, you can increase the maximum permitted main fuse size.

Ask your electricity contractor what electricity connection size you need and whether your existing equipment is compatible with the desired change, and then order an upgrade of the connection right. We will handle any necessary changes to the electricity network as far as the connection point. Your contractor should handle any changes to the electrical equipment from the connection point. Your contractor will be responsible for upgrading the fuses for the connection on your property.

We charge an additional connection fee for upgrading the connection right. The fee is calculated by subtracting the connection fee for your existing connection from the connection fee for the larger connection.

Increasing the size of an electricity connection step by step

1

Is the electricity connection in your name?

Only the owner of the connection may order the upgrade of a connection right. Report a change of owner on Caruna+. You can also place an order with a power of attorney, which you should append to the order.

Ask your electricity contractor what electricity connection size you need and whether your existing equipment is compatible with the desired change

If you are wondering what size of electricity connection right you need, contact an electricity contractor. They will help you check that you have the right connection size, that your existing connection line is sufficient, and that your electrical equipment is compatible with the desired change.

The connection size, i.e., the connection right, means defining the maximum electricity distribution to the connection according to the fuse size (nominal current) of the connection. Connection rights cannot be reduced at a later date, but they can be increased. However, you can use smaller or larger fuses on the connection within the limits of the connection rights.

3

Order an upgrade of the electricity connection in good time when you know what connection size you need

When we process the order, we will check whether the electricity network needs to be reinforced due to the upgrade. If it is necessary to reinforce the network, the delivery time for the change will be several months. If necessary, we will strengthen the electricity network as far as the connection point. The additional connection contract will specify the connection point and delivery time.

You will receive an additional connection contract from us to sign. The order will take effect when you have signed it and the work begins

If the electricity network needs to be reinforced in order to upgrade the connection, we will order the construction work from our contractor, who will begin by planning the network construction and applying for permits. The contractor will contact you about the implementation of the building and the detailed schedule within approximately two weeks of the submission of the additional connection contract. In your additional connection contract, we will inform you that the network is ready if there is no need for network reinforcement.

We will charge the additional connection fee when the larger connection right is available for use. This will occur as soon as the network construction is complete or after the additional connection contract is signed if the network can already accommodate the change.

5

Your electricity contractor is responsible for changes to the electrical equipment and ordering the work from Caruna

Your electricity contractor should make the necessary changes to the installations on the property, the main distribution switchboard and the connection line. They should also fit larger main fuses in the main distribution switchboard and notify Caruna of this and any other changes to the equipment by submitting a general information form. The notification should be sent to us no later than three weeks before the desired deployment date of the upgraded connection.

6

The upgraded connection is ready to use!

You can begin using the larger connection when any network reinforcement measures are complete and your electricity contractor has verified that the electrical equipment is compatible with the change.

Q&A

How do I know the connection size that I need?

If you need to upgrade your electricity connection, contact an electricity contractor. They will help you check that you have the right connection size, that your existing connection line is sufficient, and that your electrical equipment is compatible with the desired change.

How quickly can I deploy a larger connection?

It depends whether any changes need to be made to the electricity network or the electrical equipment on your property.

If the electricity network needs to be reinforced in order to upgrade your connection right, the delivery time will be several months, and we will reinforce the electricity network as far as the connection point. The additional connection contract will specify the delivery time.

If there is no need to reinforce the electricity network, your electricity contractor can upgrade the main fuses immediately. Larger fuses can be deployed as soon as you have signed an additional connection contract.

Your electricity contractor should always ensure that the electrical equipment on your property is compatible with the change. If other changes are made to the electrical equipment, such as the main distribution board or the connection line, when the connection is upgraded, Caruna's contractor may need to take action. Your contractor will notify us of the changes using the general request form, which should be sent to us at least two weeks before you intend to deploy the upgraded connection.

How much does it cost to upgrade connection rights?

We will invoice an additional connection fee for connecting to the electricity network in accordance with the connection rates. When your connection right changes, the additional connection fee is calculated by subtracting the connection fee for your old connection right from the connection fee for the larger connection. For example, the fee for upgrading a 3 x 25 ampere connection to a 3 x 35 ampere connection in zone 1 in Caruna Oy's area is EUR 1,060. Please refer to our connection fee price list for the upgrade prices.

How can I check my connection right?

You can check the contracts related to your customer account and your connection right on Caruna+. If you cannot see any details about your connection contract, the information on the connection owner may be out of date. The new owner of the connection should notify Caruna of the change of ownership. If the connection should be in your ownership, submit a change of ownership form to bring the electricity connection into your name.

Will my electricity distribution product change at the same time?

Your electricity distribution product may change at the same time. Your distribution product is based on your network service agreement on electricity distribution with Caruna, and the agreement states your maximum fuse size.

What are Caruna's duties when upgrading a connection?

If necessary, we will strengthen the electricity network to enable the larger connection right as far as the connection point. The work will be carried out by our contractor, who will contact you about the implementation of the work and the detailed schedule within approximately two weeks of the submission of the additional connection contract.

If your electricity contractor makes other changes to the electrical equipment, such as the main distribution board or the connection line, when the connection is upgraded, they may require work to be done on the connection or meter, and your contractor should order this work from us. The general request form should be sent to us no later than two weeks before the desired work date. Our partner contractor will agree on the exact schedule for the works with your contractor.

What tasks are my responsibility?

You should look for an electricity contractor well in advance of the necessary change. They will prepare your property's electrical equipment for the change and take responsibility for the alteration works from the connection point onward. These include possible changes to the connection cable and the main distribution board, as well as increasing the fuse size, among other things. Your electricity contractor will notify Caruna of the changes, and the notice should be sent to us at least three weeks before the desired date of the work.

According to my electricity contractor, the connection line needs to be replaced in conjunction with the change. Who is responsible for it?

The responsibility for replacing the connection line depends on the connection point and whether the connection line has sufficient capacity for the larger connection size.

If the connection point is the main distribution board and the connection line does not have sufficient capacity, Caruna is responsible for replacing the connection line as part of its network reinforcement measures. In other cases, the customer is responsible for replacing the connection line. The additional connection contract will specify the connection point and whether the network needs to be reinforced.

Please note that Caruna will not make any changes to installations inside the customer's property. If the main distribution board is indoors, the customer and its contractor are responsible for the cable route from outside the property to the main distribution board.

Our electricity connection is owned by several parties, and one of them wants to upgrade the connection. What should we do?

Place an order for increasing the connection. We will send an additional connection contract for every owner of the connection to sign. The contract can also be sent for one owner to sign if the other owners have authorised this party to order the connection upgrade by granting power of attorney to sign on their behalf. Append the power of attorney to the order.

We will send one additional connection invoice for the change to the connection right, addressed to all the owners of the connection. We cannot divide an invoice among different owners or address an invoice to only one owner, but you may make your own agreement on the payment of the invoice.
